I was mildly intrigued when I found out the mostly-amusing, charming French movie Jeu de cons was being remade as a Hollywood movie, given that the humor translated fairly well and there was a lot of talent involved with the film. But, as it turns out from the trailer, enh, probably not, with a lot of slapstick humor and stuff breaking and the usual stereotypes of American humor, i.e. screaming at you, DO YOU GET IT, THEY’RE SO DUMB AND GOOFY?!? Anyway, part of the humor of the original is that the con is a) taken completely seriously by himself and his coworkers, is b) quite a nice human being and c) obviously, an idiot. The classic twist at the end is that the idiot manages to get the couple back together, only to be caught in an obvious lie, splitting the couple up again, leading the main male lead to think of him as an idiot all over again. How much do you want to bet that the couple ends up together again through the efforts of Steve Carrell these time around? Because I’m certain I’ll win the bet.
On the other hand, Larry Wilmore is prominently involved in the film…
